From Library Journal

Warrior priest Damien Vryce and immortal sorcerer Gerald Tarrant reunite in an uneasy alliance to combat an evil that threatens the delicate stability of life on Erna. There the mysterious force known as the "fae" conjures monsters from the stuff of dreams. This sequel to Black Sun Rising ( LJ 11/15/91) secures Friedman's reputation both as a gifted storyteller and an innovative creator. A good choice for most libraries.

Booklist

On the planet Erma, humans have survived for 12 centuries in uneasy coexistence with the fae, a natural force with paranormal powers. Now those powers and the hostility of the fae are increasing, human survival on Erma is threatened, and a human priest-warrior and a native Erman female must go on a quest in search of a solution to the burgeoning conflict. This tale definitely straddles the border between fantasy and sf, appealing to readers of both in the manner of Bradley's chronicles of Darkover or McCaffrey's of Pern. Friedman is not yet quite as accomplished a storyteller as Bradley or McCaffrey, but she has exhibited steady growth over the years and her piling on of lots of well-chosen detail continues to bring her worlds and characters to life quite well. So her latest is for anyone who cares for its kind of quest-romance. Roland Green

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Even better than Black Sun Rising 15 août 2012

I was captivated by Black Sun Rising. I have become rather jaded over the years and I find book less satisfying than I once did. However, I was unable to put Black Sun Rising down. I buoght it because I had a gift card and needed to use it. I had never heard of C.S. Friedman for read any of her other books, and was so pleasantly surprised by Black Run Rising I was excited to get ahold of When True Night falls.

I chose the audio version of this book. I have to say the story itself, the characters and the world was even more immersive and satisfying that the first book in the series. Where as I found some rather slower, boring parts to the first book, I found none in the second.

I like the unique magic system of the plant Erna. This second installment goes into more detail as to the why and how, how animals and plants and even people can be evolved by the Fae which is effected by human thoughts/feelings/beliefs.

The religious system is also uniqiue, I feel, but also real, the belief that one's faith can create their environment is not new, but I raelly liked the physical manifestations of faith in this series, the idea that what you believe can manifest real. I especially like the portrayal of the Priest in this book. He is a man of faith and action, but he is also very human. He makes a deal with evil in pursuit of good, and both the effects and the interaction of this relationship on both men is facinating.

And, I enjoyed the environments of Erna a lot. Plains of flood basalts, and lands of giant crystals, seas and oceans, the Fae there, the forms it takes, the inhabitants and plant life evolved there, were drawn in great detail. The detail in C.S. Friedman's writing is amazing. If you don't care for really involved stories with complicated characters and detailed descriptions, then you may not like this book. I for one, love that style. I find her characters are the human in the superhuman or the superhuman in the human, the good in the evil and the evil in the good.

While I feel like I've come a long way with all the characters along their journey, and gotten to know them better, I feel like there is so much more to see and learn and more alterations coming, and I can't wait to start the third book.

In addition, the audio book presentation is perfect. The narrator does an excellent job with voices, inflections, accents, ect. The pacing wasn't too fast or too slow. Emphasis wasn't too exagerated or too flat. Women and children weren't read in a nasal tonethat most male narrators seen to read women and children. For most of the book, I wasn't even aware there was a narrator he did such a good job. I'll be looking for other books read by him on Audible.

This is still one of my favorite fantasy books ever. The writing is all-over great. The characters are fantastic. This book is definitely a "middle" book -- mostly setting up for the really big show-down in book 3 -- but is still very good even so. CS Friedman remains one of my favorite fantasy authors to this day.

For those who wish to be drawn into a world of danger enveloped in the fae, and explore an unlikely alliance of two men ever at odds with one another, united under a common goal, you could do far worse than reading this book. The Coldfire trilogy is beautifully written and brought to life by a talented narrator. It's extremely rare to find a sequel that surpasses the original, but this is certainly the case. When True Night Falls builds on, expands, and improves the story and engages the reader even more effectively than its predecessor.
2.0 étoiles sur 5 Needs Editing 5 novembre 2012

The second book in this trilogy is disappointing.I found myself skimming through many sections. The conflict between Damien and the Hunter looses its effect when gone over in every chapter. The hunter being afraid of this new evil should create a feeling of terror in the reader but it is mentioned to many times. The book has potential but needs editing to find its pace. I found the religious ideas interesting. The idea of faith creating a god is a new concept for me but it can be true on Earth and Erna.

I am an avid fantasy reader and not usually very impressed with sci-fi. This book does a great job of blending the two. I completely enjoyed this book and the series as a whole. You can examine it only as the words on the page or delve into the thought behind them and be blown away either way. I now have an author to set alongside Jordan, butcher, and Sanderson
