Présentation de l'éditeur
There is little doubt that the invention of the phonetic alphabet was a pivotal event in the development of human culture, paralleled in importance by only a handful of events such as the beginning of tool-making and the invention of Gutenberg's printing press... The development of the phonetic alphabet is commonly attributed to a mysterious ancient civilization, known as 'Phoenician'... Many researchers have addressed this mystery, and a multitude of ideas and conjectures have been made in hundreds and thousands of articles and books. In my view, the same applies to the current study, originally published in Hebrew three decades ago... One can also not remain indifferent when reading this book. M.Ben-Dov, Historian & Archeologist

Not really about the Phoenicians
le 20 juin 2013 - Publié sur Amazon.com
The book is well researched but the title is misleading. Lots of the evidence cited is from the bible and subject to interpretation. Many interpretations are taken from different meaniings in ancient languages. Very heavy going and not much information about the Phoenicians themselves, mostly about the authors methods and surmises.

Nissim Ganor has made a huge contribution to our understanding of the Phoenicians and their origins and I highly recommend this book to all amateur historians and biblical archeology buffs. The book seems to be the product of Ganor's lifelong passion. And indeed Ganor makes his case painstakingly and provides reams of research. The book is dense with argument and geared to a particular audience, but it rewards the reader with exciting theories, well supported and thoroughly thought-provoking. It also weaves into biblical history in fascinating ways. Without revealing the ending, I can tell you that this book's theory, should you accept it, lifts a veil off of the mysterious Phoenicians, colonizers of the Mediterranean and inventors of the alphabet. It is a must read for all those curious about the origins of our civilization. Bravo to Mr. Ganor for his work.
