Description du produit
Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of a deluxe 4 disc clamshell boxed set edition of the classic 1978 album Wise After the Event by Genesis founder member Anthony Phillips. Produced by Rupert Hine, Wise After the Event was Anthony's second solo album and was a superb blend of instrumental music and songs. The record saw Anthony supported by an able cast of musicians that included Mike Giles & Mel Collins (King Crimson) and John G. Perry (Caravan, Quantum Jump). Featuring such wonderful compositions as 'We're All As We Lie', 'Now What (Are They Doing to My Little Friends)', 'Moonshooter', 'Paperchase' and the album's title track, Wise After the Event is a genuine classic of the Progressive era. This deluxe edition features a new stereo mix of the album, a newly re-mastered version of the original album stereo mix and a CD of demos, out-takes and extras. The set also includes a DVD (NTSC Region Free) of a new 5.1 Surround Sound Mix of the record and a lavishly illustrated booklet with a new essay by Jon Dann featuring interviews with Anthony Phillips and Rupert Hine (the album's producer). Wise After the Event is the latest release in Esoteric Recordings' on-going series of official Anthony Phillips reissues.

PS: (five more words required ... why?)
This is my review of the new release, "Wise After the Event" Boxset. Wow, incredible package, great new pictures not included in the previews Cd's. and more stories of Ant¨s life back in 1977/78. You can't miss this great and marvelous item containing three Cd's and one DVD, do your self a favor if you are a fan of great melodic and progressive music, buy it today!!!!! Ricardo Otero, Mexico.
That buyer caveat all being said.......if you have never purchased this music, this is one of my favorite Ant collections and well worth the expenditure Once! I especially recommend the original CD remaster in this set, and the article/poster inside are most collectible.
Personal favorite songs are Birdsong, Greenhouse, We're all as We Lie, and Paperchase, which to me blows away anything that Ant's ex-band was doing at the time. Anthony did not appear to be embracing any sort of commercial success at the time unlike other bands, and looked (like one of his albums said) for a beauty and majesty in music that does appear here in droves. Some of this music can almost make you cry and the words are stellar, I wish I could live in some of these songs and thanks to Ant for that. I had to look up some of his words in the dictionary when I first heard this music as Ant is very literate and poetic.
As far as the 'New Stereo Mix' also included in the set......I have had this opinion since I purchased some Genesis new stereo mixes......I am a lot older now than when this music was first released......the people remixing this music involved from 1978 are also a lot older than when this was originally mixed. I was not happy that Genesis seemed to remix their music such as the Musical Box to be almost easy listening music, screeching guitar solos that I loved were muted on the later remix. The jury is still out for me on this 'new' stereo mix of Wise After the Event by Andy Miles and Simon Heyworth (Rupert Hine did the 1977 mixing); my favorite is still the original mix done in the original release year by the young and hungry artist and engineers. So I will play the original mix remaster the most out of these 4 CDs.
Peter Cross' artwork is great and I wish the artwork alone from the Ant albums/CDs could be released by themselves!
Bottom line: If you don't have this music, GET IT, it's Fantastic and has aged like a fine wine through the years that is totally still drinkable to discerning ears. Treat the World as on Wedding Days.
Be aware that Anthony has moved away from this sort of music and his latest releases are in a different genre (City of Dreams recommended as a recent 2012 release, and it is somewhat ambient music).
7/25/16 Update: I have raised my review to 5 Stars from 4, as it's hard to knock Ant's work for some of this music being released in 2008, and some slight tech quirks on the DVD in this set. The words are included in this 4 CD/DVD set, but unlike the new Sides 4 CD/DVD set(where the words are in the booklet) the words here are on the back of the enclosed poster in this set.
The 5.1 DVD Surround issue seems to be whatever song you play First when starting the DVD....it may skip at the song's beginning.......just restarting the song makes it play correctly. The 5.1 surround mix, while not perfect (some vocals now are more muted, some are louder than before, some background parts are as loud as the leads), does let you hear nuances of backing vocals and instruments that I do not hear well in the stereo mix. I listened to both DTS and Dolby digital formats (make sure your DVD player, then the amp you are using are both set to play the correct surround sound when you select it off of the DVD itself!)
In the end, those sapient enough to purchase this set will have many halcyon days enjoying it.
Here's the category - "The Long Lost Genesis Album" - for fans of the original, Peter Gabriel lead band that became something else once Phil Collins increasingly put his commercial stamp on them. For me, that really took hold with "Abacab" though the roots were planted once they lost Steve Hackett beginning with "And Then There Were Three". In any event, this is less about when it started and more about an essence quality that lived in the band going back to their early days when Ant was their guitarist. And there was lots of quiet, 12 string guitar with more reflective vocals and fantasy based lyrics. A long time ago in a Genesis universe far, far away...
This was Ant's 2nd solo album (according to Wikipedia). It was released in 1978 and was apparently the only solo album he sang all of the lead vocals on. There is a somewhat complicated cd release that you can track on Wikipedia but nonetheless, I have a beautiful, vinyl "Passport" copy of it that I base this review on. Somehow, I believe this is what Ant meant to have this released as.
As it happened, I stumbled upon this disc in a used record bin but immediately knew Ant by name. Then I noticed the personnel - Michael Giles and Mel Collins (King Crimson) and Rupert Hine (producer of some renown) and thought 'This should be checked out'. So I asked to have it played and sure enough, though the vocals are soft and multi-tracked (comparable to when Steve Hackett does his own vocals), there was a quality to the music that was definitely Genesis. In the best sense, not the Phil Collins Band. Listening to it more, I am blown away!
This is a 1978 recording. And my version is beautifully analog vinyl. I am a big fan of early Genesis as well as "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering". They lost a lot after Steve Hackett left. From then on, I have my list of the "Lost Genesis Albums" for others like me who miss that aspect of the band. In this group, I include the first 4 Steve Hackett solo albums and Peter Gabriel's first 4 solo albums. After his commercial success with "So", he entered a different category I believe. Good for him!
I am happy to include this title by Ant as part of this elite group of "Lost Genesis Albums" that should be heard by fans of the early band.
What makes this album worth checking out is the range of its musicality. Apparently, Ant was apprehensive as a live performer. Well, if so, the studio is clearly his environment. The compositions get stronger as they go and this is an artist with a destination for this album.
I didn't know it until I stumbled upon it today. April 23, 2011. That's too long! I am writing this review to share it with others who might enjoy it as well. Check it out. You won't be sorry!
