You can spend a heck of a lot more money on earbuds and get earbuds that aren't nearly as amazing in terms of sound quality. However, these are an unbelievable deal. For under $40, you can get yourself an amazing set of earbuds that do not require a headphone amp and have incredible, clear, transparent sound with astoundingly tight and punchy bass.
I actually prefer listening through these instead of my Alessandro MS-1 headphones. My work earbuds were a set of Bose IE2s that were given to me as a gift--although the Bose earbuds were great in terms of clarity and bass quantity, I used them as my work earbuds and kept my really nice Sennheisers and Grados at home. Upon the very first listen to the Yuin PK3s, I realized what all I was missing with the Bose IE2s. These are now my go-to earbuds for all my portable listening, and I only use other headphones when I am not at home with my not-so-portable DAC and amp.
If you can find a decent pair of Blox M2Cs, they are a slight upgrade from these for a very similar price. However, Blox makes such limited quantities in their earbud batches that they are very difficult to locate in great condition. If you are looking for earbuds, you will NOT find a better set for any similar price. You will spend significantly more before you match the sound quality.
Summary: Excellent earbud that blows away others at 6-8 times this price. Does NOT require a headphone amp like some similar grade audiophile products.
The sound is clear and crisp in the mids and highs. The bass response, for obvious reasons, is not as deep as isolating buds or large cans, but don't get me wrong, the bass in this set is still very good. The bass is very punchy and I find it perfect for classical or rock listening. I still listen to more bass-heavy music with this set, just use an equalizer to boost lower frequencies up a small bit.
The build itself appears to be fine. The earphones look like basic $5 earphones that used to come with cassette players; they're not flashy, they're very minimal. There was some talk about this set using a J-cord, but the set I received uses a Y-cord, so I don't know where all that is coming from. The packaging includes a small plastic storage cylinder to keep everything, a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter, user manual, and 2 sets of 3 foam pads. One set of pads completely covers the earphone, and the other set covers it but leaves a hole in the center such that it doesn't block the apertures in the earphone.
With an impedance of about 32 ohms, you don't really need an amplifier for it, and I imagine the 1/4" adapter won't be of much use because of this.
A lot of people complain about the quality control of Yuin, saying that the buds pretty much fall apart after a few months. I saw these warnings but proceeded anyways, as I believe that for about $35, I am willing to buy more of these as they break simply because it performs so well. When my first pair breaks, I will attempt to repair it and update my review. From what I gathered, it seems to be as simple as contacts getting loose which can (hopefully) be fixed with a small soldering job.
I highly recommend these buds because at this price point and earphone type, you cannot get better than the PK3s.
They were compared on rock music mp3, speech (didn't matter), soundtrack FLACC, against the apple earbuds, a very cheap pair from a 20 dollar mp3 player, earbuds from the cowan mp3 player. These were mid priced. There were no serious surprises. The apple ones were middling. the cheap pair was gawd awful in every way. These were the best BUT I am NOT comparing them to can earphones, to noise dampening in-canal earbuds (they never stay in), nor to truly high end earbuds (which are nearly always incanal noise blocking).
Of the under 50 dollar ones I sampled these were the best BUT:
the human ear is based on LOGARITHMIC not linear physics. The decibel scale is log 10 of power of sound. Likewise quality is logarithmic. Something has to be 10 times better to be perceived as definitely better. So, the crap is definitely worse than the apple. The apple is worse than these.... but you have to listen really closely for a long time to be able to see a small difference. I'm partly deaf compared to a young person. There's no way I'm going to be able to get enough out of a 200 dollar pair of earphones of any sort to be able to significantly beat these.
Close to the best out there. I use them while sitting. They won't wear out on me.
