This excellent CD set, like Stephen Copes book "Yoga and the Quest For The True Self" is not about Yoga Postures (asanas).

Rather it is dealing with the internal aspects of Yoga and our emotional life.
The first CD of this 2 CD set lays out the basic psychology of yoga and the second CD contains excellent guided meditations.
The first meditation on CD 2 is a wonderful "body scan" which takes you from the top of your head downwards through your body, releasing tension throughout, the next deals with the "riding the wave" technique that he talks about in the above mentioned book (Breathe, Relax, Feel, Watch, Allow) and guides you in a practice of this technique, and the last practice is excellent to prepare you for sleep and clear yourself out emotionally, psychologically and relax you physically.
I am really glad I got this set and Highly recommend it!
Thank you Stephen Cope for making this available to those of us who wish to take Yoga into our lives and not only practice on our Yoga mats.

This set consists of two CDs. The first CD provides a simplified introduction to yoga thought and covers concepts such as duality, interdependence and the distinction between feeling an emotion and acting out. It also talks about the development of witness consciousness, introduces the concept of an energy body and talks about how this is related to working with emotions. The first CD also briefly discusses yoga as a physical practice and an overall life philosophy. It's a good introduction for those who know very little about yoga, but have some real curiosity about the very basic concepts.

The second CD is where the real value of this set comes in. Disc TWO begins with an exercise called the daily body scan which puts one in touch with the sensations that are occurring in the body. Since emotions are related to what is occurring in the body and awareness of changes in these sensations, the overall effect is to heighten awareness of emotions as they are expressed or held in the body.

The second exercise on this CD talks about riding an emotion as a surfer would ride a wave. It builds on exercise 1 and helps the individual to disidentify with their emotion it while fully feeling it. This causes a felt shift and perhaps a healing transformation. This often happens in therapy, so this is not exactly a foreign concept.

I particularly like the third exercise on this CD which you do before you fall asleep. It is similar to exercise 2, but it brings in the events of the day and has a very relaxing phase that quiets the nervous system through deep and relaxed breathing. Physiologically, by extending the exhalation by relaxing the abdomen and avoiding chest breathing, the parasympathetic branch (calming) of the nervous system is activated. If you don't like deep explanations, then all I can say is it will help you with problems with insomnia.

If you are interested in working with emotions in this way and would like to read further, I suggest THE POWER OF FOCUSING and/or FOCUSING and Tara Bennet-Goleman's excellent book EMOTIONAL ALCHEMY. For a truly great and comprehensive introduction to yoga, I highly recommend THE YOGA TRADITION by Georg Feurenstein. If I could rate this book a 6 I would and it is a tremendous bargain at under $30.00.

This is a wonderful cd set (2 cd's included).

In the first CD Stephen Cope talks about being a human being, emotions, purpose, and being a witness and how yoga integrates with these emotions. I have not listened to the whole CD, but most of it...it's is exceptional!!!! It is wonderful CD to have in your car to listen to again and again.

The second CD is 3 meditations. All three of them are lovely, but my favorite is called Riding the Wave. You can do each one separately or together. I love Stephen Copes voice, but I kind of wish that they would have added music and/or nature sounds to the meditation tracks.

This is a must have CD and Amazon has the best deal going at $16.97 for the 2-set CD (retail price is $24.95)

Also, Stephen Cope has a wonderful Kripalu Yoga DVD/VHS that is very good. See my other reviews on Amazon.

For anyone interested in a totally accesible guided meditation, the first CD provides a step by step methodology which is easy for any beginner and valuable for seasoned pracititioners. The verbal cues are perfect, the tone is soothing, the infomation is clear and spot on. I have given this CD set a gifts to friends going through difficult times, chemotherapy, separations, as well as to people new to yoga. Once you listen to this, you will want to share it!

My husband and I used this regulary for a few months, and we both saw dramatic differences in how we handle and approach life. It came at just the right time to help me move my yoga practice "off the mat." Stephen Cope's technique is amazing: his voice, words, attitude, intent are all set at just the right level to provide a deeply accepting posture. In many ways it is the best self-hypnosis device I've ever found. I can't say enough positive things about Yoga for Emotional Flow!
