I would have liked to rate this book higher but I purchased the Kindle version which did not include the audio CD.

I found the book to be very informative in explaining what Yoga Nidra is, its benefits and the various phases, or stages of practice. What I found to be greatly lacking is the details on how to practice.

Without the CD, (I can only assume that directions are given on the CD), I could certainly understand the goals of each stage of practice but had no guidance as to how to go about it.

It might be a good idea to provide a download link, to the audio file, for those of us buying the Kindle version of this book.

As a clinician, I frequently use mindfulness mind/body awareness trainings with the people I work with. I began incorporating Yoga Nidra as presented by this book into my clinical work, and I can report that it is frequently transformative for people. Everyone to whom I have suggested giving it a try has benefited from the increase in self awareness. This small book is dense in content, and it deserves a slow and thorough reading -- and re-reading -- to fully grasp the concepts. But the real insights will only come through doing it, preferably every day for about six weeks. This is a wonderful book and provides a process that is simple yet effective. Don't analyze it, just experience it.

I like the book. The CD was OK but I found Miller's voice annoying but I am told by yoga teachers that he really knows his stuff. Maybe he is better in person. I had also gotten a CD from a yoga teacher in the city where I live and liked hers better but maybe because her voice was more soothing to me. I also read Swami Satyananda Saraswati's book, Yoga Nidra, and liked it better. I think Miller's book is good introduction to Yoga Nidra practice, but it clearly is something that needs to be experienced in a better fashion than just by reading a book. If he is ever available for a class, I would go. That being said, I think if you already have some grounding in yoga nidra, this book would be a good adjunct. It may be a good first book on yoga nidra as well. I just happend to have had some slight exposure before I bought it and so had some preferences already developed.
I got interested in yoga nidra because of its similarity to hypnosis, which I am still trying to figure out. There is also a difference in approach in yoga nidra regarding picking an intention. Miller says to do it in the present tense but others don't insist on that. It sort of reminds me of The Law of Attraction, to be truthful. There is plenty of documentation that practitioners of yoga nidra can enter delta brain waves and stay aware. That is pretty impressive. But, like anything else, it would take quite a bit of practice and probably better instruction than a book or CD is going to provide. Still, this book provides some good information on a very interesting practice--sleep yoga.

Yoga Nidra may not necessarily be what some people are expecting. This form of guided meditation doesn't have you envisioning warm sunshine over the body or the sound of a babbling stream. Instead, you are guided through a series of sensing exercises as you examine the relationship between emotions and feelings and their effect on the body - eventually helping you to realize the duality created by the mind that ultimately causes suffering. For instance, you are asked to notice the constriction of the heart as you think about a time when you felt closed off to a person or situation. Then you are guided away from being directly in those feelings, observing them instead. I've been practicing this for some time in the form of vipassana meditation, and Yoga Nidra is a nice supplement to that practice.

The CD is very well produced and Richard Miller's voice and pacing are quite good. His instructions are clear, without talking too much. Some meditation CDs are very wordy to the point of distraction, but this one isn't like that.

However, the book that comes with the CD is in desperate need of an editor. I'm a yoga teacher and generally used to reading flowery material, but this one goes over the top. I found myself reading and rereading sentences trying to cut through all the adjectives to get to the meaning. I think Richard Miller's points are often lost in his overly descriptive text. A good editor would do this book a great deal of service.

I don't think you necessarily need the book to get something from the CD. However, it is useful to understand what the meditation is all about b/c it isn't the same as other forms. It's a shame that his text makes the practice seem overly involved. As such, it took me an extra few weeks to get around to listening to the CD b/c the book made it seem like the meditation was going to be a lot of work.

My advice is to listen to the CD and THEN read the book, even though Richard Miller says otherwise.
