Personnel:Phil Woods (alto sax); Brian Lynch (trumpet); Jim McNeely (piano); Steve Gilmore (bass); Bill Goodwin (drums)
It's little surprise that the Phil Woods Quintet shines during this collection of standards from the movies, but their fresh approach to each of these very familiar songs is what makes this release special. With charts by the leader, trumpeter Brian Lynch, and pianist Jim McNeely, the group devours each of the nine pieces with strong solos and beautiful interplay to boot. 'You and the Night and the Music' gets things off to a brisk beginning, with bassist Steve Gilmore initially playing the melody with tasty unison licks behind him. Both of Branislau Kaper's songs ('Invitation' and 'On Green Dolphin Street') are old warhorses that would seem to be in danger of overexposure, but both pieces feature off-of-center arrangements that make them stand out from the slew of recordings available of them. It is an essential CD for fans of the great Phil Woods. EDITOR RATING: 4 STARS **** --All Music Guide (Ken Dryden)Voir l'ensemble des Descriptions du produit

If you have no Phil Woods albums this is a good place to begin... if you have others, this one is a must have.
I cannot get enough of Phil... I have over 100 (and counting) of his CDs & LPs. His horn speaks with a heart & soul & passion that goes beyond mere technical virtuosity. He is beyond Greatness!!
This album has been remastered hi-tech with the tracks simply rearranged. If you don't need the extra HiFi stick to the
original and save at least 50%! The music and quality is top rate on the original. It appears that many "new" releases are simply reissues with modifications. Compare wisely and enjoy!
