HOWEVER, the recipes are NOT "effortless" or "easy" - definitely things to try on the weekend when you have more time. Additionally, the ingredients are not things we had in our pantry (e.g., truffle oil, Humbolt Fog cheese, Champagne vinegar, etc.).
As I told a friend, this cookbook is perfect for my fictitious children - the ones who sit still at adult functions, wear beautiful clothes (without stains), and will try anything without complaint. As much as I would like them to, I highly doubt they will eat "Raspberry Endives with Candied Pecans" or "Honey Curry Glazed Vegetables and Garbanzos."
Also - as a side note, I found the "original yummy muumy tips" sprinkled throughout the cookbook to be a little trite and condescending. I don't need a cookbook to impart wisdom, such as "Don't underestimate the importance of spending quality time with your kids." Really?
From the get-go, this seems to be one of those books you will either "really get" and enjoy or find it irritating, grating and want to rip some of the pages out as you go along. This reviewer just could not gel with the general tone of the book's advice nor its "wrapping". Your views may vary. It is a shame when a book can generate that sort of feeling as it tends to overshadow the rest of the content, which in this book's case, is actually quite good.
The recipes are split into eight key chapters - Appetizers, Hors d'Oeuvres and Snacks; Soups; Salads and Vegetables; Meatless Main Dishes; From the Sea; Desserts; Breakfast and Brunch and For the Meat Lovers. This reviewer must be getting (even more?) grumpy with old age as these jazzed-up chapter titles tend to irritate more than illuminate. What's wrong with Starters, Snacks, Fish and the like? After the various recipes come a few sample weekly menus, party menus and various bits of advice about how to get your children to eat their greens, how to stock your pantry and so forth.
In many ways this book is disappointing. It is by no means a cheap book, even allowing for the inevitable discounting that will occur, yet the core content - the recipes themselves - are very good on the whole. Without a lot effort this reviewer was able to make quite a large mental checklist of things to try out thanks, in part, to the very engaging food photography used throughout. The recipes themselves are a little too sparsely written, but clearly understandable. Perhaps strangely for a book aimed at busy mothers there is no mention of a clear estimated preparation and cooking time. That and our other niggle about the sole use of U.S. imperial measures sadly must be highlighted for this book.
If this book was half the price and contained just the recipes and photographs this would probably be a slam dunk instant five YUM (star) review. It is just that the price and the extra "packaging" doesn't make it any more appealing for this reviewer. It might be worth looking out for this book at a bookstore and checking it out for yourself if you share this reviewer's general concerns about fluffy packaging. Sadly, as it is, this book just struggles through to get a four YUM (star) rating, but it is a borderline three to four currently.
