4.0 étoiles sur 5 Ok Cookbook, but recipes definately are not "Effortless" 24 avril 2013

This cookbook is ok, but it does not stand out from other cookbooks in my opinion. The recipes, while interesting, are not the kind of foods most kids would gobble up, let alone try. It also seems that many of the recipes are very time consuming and have a long list of ingredients, not quite the "effortless" recipes that the title suggests. In addition, many of the recipes have ingredients that the average person will not have on hand such as Goat Cheese, Truffle Oil, Gorgonzola Cheese, Humboldt Fog cheese, Burrata cheese balls, Champagne Vinegar, Jarlsberg Cheese, Gruyere Cheese, Mascarpone Cheese, Pasteurized Dried Egg Whites, etc. This is definately not a cookbook that you could use on a weeknight after getting home from work. I will definately be trying many of the recipes on the weekends when I have more time for cooking, but don't be fooled into thinking that the recipes are in any way "effortless" or "quick and easy". I believe another reviewer mentioned something to that effect. I find it suspicious that this cookbook has received only 5 star reviews thus far and many of the reviewers have never left reviews for any other products on Amazon. Many also are not shown as being Verified Purchasers of this book. The reviews are so over the top with lots of exclamation points, capitalized words, people offering to send one to your doorstep if you don't believe their glowing review, etc. that I am suspicious of them. That being said, this cookbook is nice...many pictures and little tidbits of advice, and I very much appreciate the abundance of meatless recipes. Would I purchase this cookbook again? Probably not. However, since I have already, I will try to put it to use on the weekends when I have more time to cook for my family.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 not for my family 19 mai 2013

I wanted to love this cookbook - the photography is GORGEOUS, the recipes are laid out in an easy to read fashion.

HOWEVER, the recipes are NOT "effortless" or "easy" - definitely things to try on the weekend when you have more time. Additionally, the ingredients are not things we had in our pantry (e.g., truffle oil, Humbolt Fog cheese, Champagne vinegar, etc.).

As I told a friend, this cookbook is perfect for my fictitious children - the ones who sit still at adult functions, wear beautiful clothes (without stains), and will try anything without complaint. As much as I would like them to, I highly doubt they will eat "Raspberry Endives with Candied Pecans" or "Honey Curry Glazed Vegetables and Garbanzos."

Also - as a side note, I found the "original yummy muumy tips" sprinkled throughout the cookbook to be a little trite and condescending. I don't need a cookbook to impart wisdom, such as "Don't underestimate the importance of spending quality time with your kids." Really?

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not for regular-mom cooking! 13 août 2013
Par Kay - Publié sur Amazon.com

This book contains some mouthwatering recipes and the photography is stunning but as far as being an "effortless" cookbook for regular working moms, especially those on a budget, forget it. The ingredient lists go on forever and include all kinds of exotic cheeses, fruits and seafood, much of which are not things the average home cook has on hand. And for the countless moms who have trouble getting their kids to eat broccoli or a pear, I can't imagine the appearance of kumquats, lavender garnish or lacinato kale is going to help matters much. With "mom tips" like "You don't have to wait for a special occasion to eat finer things like lobster", "my favourite classic red lipstick is 'Lover' by Chanel" and "any day is a good day to pull out the good crystal glasses and have a sip of champagne", it makes me feel that there's not much point even reading most of the recipes as it's probably going to take my entire week's food budget to make one meal. In short, a visually appealing book but totally impractical for the workaday cook.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 This could have been so good 14 juin 2013

Here's a collection of mostly meatless child-friendly recipes, wrapped up with a fair bit of advice and the so-last-year "Yummy Mummy" label.

From the get-go, this seems to be one of those books you will either "really get" and enjoy or find it irritating, grating and want to rip some of the pages out as you go along. This reviewer just could not gel with the general tone of the book's advice nor its "wrapping". Your views may vary. It is a shame when a book can generate that sort of feeling as it tends to overshadow the rest of the content, which in this book's case, is actually quite good.

The recipes are split into eight key chapters - Appetizers, Hors d'Oeuvres and Snacks; Soups; Salads and Vegetables; Meatless Main Dishes; From the Sea; Desserts; Breakfast and Brunch and For the Meat Lovers. This reviewer must be getting (even more?) grumpy with old age as these jazzed-up chapter titles tend to irritate more than illuminate. What's wrong with Starters, Snacks, Fish and the like? After the various recipes come a few sample weekly menus, party menus and various bits of advice about how to get your children to eat their greens, how to stock your pantry and so forth.

In many ways this book is disappointing. It is by no means a cheap book, even allowing for the inevitable discounting that will occur, yet the core content - the recipes themselves - are very good on the whole. Without a lot effort this reviewer was able to make quite a large mental checklist of things to try out thanks, in part, to the very engaging food photography used throughout. The recipes themselves are a little too sparsely written, but clearly understandable. Perhaps strangely for a book aimed at busy mothers there is no mention of a clear estimated preparation and cooking time. That and our other niggle about the sole use of U.S. imperial measures sadly must be highlighted for this book.

If this book was half the price and contained just the recipes and photographs this would probably be a slam dunk instant five YUM (star) review. It is just that the price and the extra "packaging" doesn't make it any more appealing for this reviewer. It might be worth looking out for this book at a bookstore and checking it out for yourself if you share this reviewer's general concerns about fluffy packaging. Sadly, as it is, this book just struggles through to get a four YUM (star) rating, but it is a borderline three to four currently.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Beautiful Cookbook 11 août 2013

This cookbook has beautiful photography & absolutely fabulous recipes! It is chocked full of recipes (100)! Every recipe has a photo associated with it which is an absolute necessity for my liking. Some ingredients may be considered a little more upscale, but I am able to find in our local Kroger grocery store. There are many recipes that would be great for entertaining as well as family dining. Some of the recipes remind me of Ina Garten (whom I admire) but with a healthier twist. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone with a love for cooking & entertaining...especially yummy mummies!
