3.0 étoiles sur 5 Chapter 1? 27 mars 2010

This appears to be the first chapter of a longer manga, apparently originally a doujinshi (self-published). The 14 year old protagonist, Masaharu, is peacefully minding his own business when a very strange young woman bursts in on him, explains that she is an alien, and starts asking weird questions and making very out-of-date pop-culture references; at first it seems like she may just be nuts but it soon develops that, yes, she really is an alien (and has a taste for ants). Masaharu's sister cheerfully lets alien-girl stay with them, so long as she does all the housework. End of installment.

Artwise, this has the looser and scrawlier style that many artists use for doujinshi, which are usually less polished than their professionally published works. The big problem, however, is the English lettering; the translation is readable, although sometimes clunky, but the font choices and placement of the wording looks embarrassingly amateurish. The text is mostly right-justified, words break exactly where they fit the balloon and not according to syllables; basically it looks like it was done in Microsoft Word by someone with no experience and no familiarity with English-language manga lettering.

The story looks like it may go somewhere engagingly silly, so if the lettering won't drive you nuts it's worth a dollar, and maybe the production values will improve as it goes along. The original Japanese pages are included at the end, which those learning Japanese may find a valuable bonus.

First off, as others have said, this appears to be a doujinshi. It was about 20 pages (so, SHORT!), with a second version in the original Japanese after the English translation, which could be fun for those who want to practice their translating skills. I have never bought manga on my Kindle before and I am... a little disappointed? It was hard to read and see the details well, which I suppose I should have expected. I have one of the older Kindles, however, so perhaps it is easier to see on one of the newer ones/one with a bigger screen. There are also some parts of text that are maybe explanations that are so tiny you can't really read them, which, again, I think may just be one of the disadvantages of the format I read it in. The artwork is typical for this artist--a little casual/messy, but nice and detailed at the same time. The story is... short, but there's not a lot you can do in ~20 pages, is there? It sets up an interesting premise, anyway. It's almost like a how-they-arrived prequel to Niea_7 (which is it NOT, as far as I can tell [no antennas!], but there is a common connection in the silly alien angle).

If you are a die-hard yoshitoshi ABe fan, this will totally be worth a dollar. If not... I'd still say to buy it anyway, because come on, it's the price of a candy bar, and yoshitoshi ABe is a really great artist and writer. However, I am biased because I absolutely belong to the former category. The internet tells me there are currently two installments total and that it is "ongoing", so hopefully we'll get to read more someday.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good, but could be better 11 août 2011

This one dollar graphic tale is nicely drawn. The basic plot is clever, but it could have been better and more cleverly developed. Part of the tale is close to being silly. It involves a 14 year old Japanese boy with an extremely high IQ who is visited by a beautiful woman who says she is an alien. The alien has been studying Japanese culture and has some questions. Here was a chance to ask more perceptive and even funny questions, perhaps even mocking earthly culture, an overlooked opportunity. The alien likes to eat ant. The boy's sister comes home and allows the alien to remain if she does the housework. These two facts could also have been developed further. The author could have shown other alien idiosyncrasies and the sister could have made some more funny demands. Nevertheless, the book is worth more than the dollar.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Is it worth $1? 9 janvier 2011

As a gigantic fan of Yoshitoshi ABe I couldn't pass this up. Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, and Niea_7 all rank among my favourite anime. I own several of his artbooks and they're among my most prised possessions. That said, this was a bit of a disappointment.

First off this doujinshi is quite short. The story just begins and feels like it's abruptly cut off at the end. The art is nice and is unmistakably ABe's work. However, when rendered on the small Kindle screen the caption balloons are tiny and the print is very hard to read in places. The typesetting seems very clumsy and random and different fonts are used in different places. All in all it comes off a lot more like a poorly done scanlation than any kind of professional done work.

So, is it worth $1? I would say yes. If you're a fan of ABe, definitely. Just don't go in expecting too much because, for a soft-copy, it's not worth much more than that.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 It's a doujinshi, hopefully we'll see more installments 14 mai 2010

This is a Kindle version of a short, self-published "doujinshi" by Yoshitoshi ABe, the character-designer for "Serial Experiments Lain", writer/director of "Haibane Renmei", and creator of "NieA_7". As the earlier reviewer says, it reads like chapter one -- the opening of a longer story, unfortunately, I don't think ABe produced more of this work (he did a few volumes about "Pochiyama's Pharmacy", and seems to have moved on to other story ideas).

The translation is workmanlike, with no obvious klinkers. The art is typical of the sketchier style ABe uses for his doujinshi and manga. But, if you're an ABe fan, you'll probably want to pick this up.
