5.0 étoiles sur 5 ... borrowed from the Library THE BABY BUNNY is a sweet little book that is a practice reader for children ... 24 août 2016

~ borrowed from the Library

THE BABY BUNNY is a sweet little book that is a practice reader for children reading at the later Kindergarten Reading level. There are different editions of this book, like most of Margaret Hillert's collection, and this one has the soft pastel drawings of Robert Masheris.

The book begins with images of two baby animals that are not the bunny. Then children are presented with a image of Mama bunny and baby camouflaged by a bush. Here is the sample text from that page:

Where is the baby bunny?
Do you see it now?
Look, look.
Can you find it?

The book then follows baby bunny as it develops. It's pointed out that at first bunny cannot run and jump because it is too little. Because of that (and this is implied) baby bunny still gets it's nourishment from mother bunny. The drawing shows baby suckling.

The story progresses with baby bunny getting old enough to run, jump, and explore. Bunny feeds itself, licks itself and even has a scare when it sees a fox. The story ends with baby back with mother.

I adore this sweet little book. Not only because of the sweet artwork but because there is so much to talk about. The seasons, how babies develop from being helpless to competent, and even how camouflage works for animals of all sorts.

Besides being used as a practice reader, this book could be shared with toddlers as you can point-and-name other animals in the book and open up conversations related to development and camouflage.

When the emergent reader reads this book they gain confidence in their reading ability. The interest that a young child has in baby animals spurs the child on to read and delights their imagination. I would consider this a math and science book for a very young child, as well.
