Even as Virginia’s Jim Crow laws required them to be segregated from their white counterparts, the women of Langley’s all-black “West Computing” group helped America achieve one of the things it desired most: a decisive victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War, and complete domination of the heavens.

Starting in World War II and moving through to the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement and the Space Race, Hidden Figures follows the interwoven accounts of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Christine Darden, four African American women who participated in some of NASA’s greatest successes. It chronicles their careers over nearly three decades they faced challenges, forged alliances and used their intellect to change their own lives, and their country’s future.

Not a good read

I should not have seen the film first.
The facts are interesting because I am from Hampton, VA.
This book was more about the U.S. government, the Presidents during a span of time (1910 - 1975), a little about racism and what was happening in Hampton, Va and the surrounding areas.
This would be a good read for a historian and a guide for tourists visiting the Hampton Roads area.
The book was quite thorough on the changes and developments in the city of Hampton and Newport News.
There were many places where the transition from one idea to another idea had flaws and therefore I needed to read the sentences twice or three times to understand the subject.

I am not disappointed but I feel like someone gave me half of a snickers bar.

This book is a must read for all, but mainly female engineers. It shows what is possible, beyond all borders of origin, age or family. When you have the curiosity for science and engineering, do not let anyone get above you. This book shows that everything is possible. It is not easy, but it is possible and how important it is to help other and to give a leg up when you can. There is a possibility to have it all: work, family, friends and even hobbies. And if they have done it before, so can you! Read the book and absorb its power, kling to your dreams, your family and friends and never let anyone make you doubt in your qualities as an engineer, mother wife and friend! And look for role models, colleagues and friends who are just like you and will tell you that if they manage, you will too.

En achetant le livre, je m'attendais vraiment à retrouver l'histoire du film, et il faut en fait attendre le chapitre 13 pour retrouver le scénario.

Sur le fond, c'est un bon livre mais si vous souhaitez l'acheter pour cela, ne le faites pas.

Much more than you see in the movie

This book should not be sold with the actor's pictures on the cover because it is very different from the film. The film is fiction - it preserves the general spirit of the book, but it remixes the details and compresses the action to the point of falsifying history.

The book is a documentation of the lifes of some women working for NACA/NASA (starting in childhood, i. e. long before the film), it deals with women's lib and desegregation (and the idiocy of apartheid), there is a bit about technological progress, a bit about the Hamton region, a bit about 20th century world history and ...

Lots of interesting things to find in the book, but you'll have to also work your way through things that probably don't interest you (personally, I could have done without the descriptions of clothing). I'm getting the impression that the author tried to include every little snippet of information she learned during her research, and I can't really blame her for that. Though stricter editing would have resulted in a more compelling book. Still, it's a history (or herstory!) well worth reading...
