This is a book that teaches you how to meditate.
I read the French version over 30 years ago. It greatly improved my mind. I hold it in the highest possible regard. It is simpler and more helpful than any other zen book I have read. It taught me how to achieve enlightenment/samadi without the mystique of so many other spiritual paths. Of course it is a practical skill, and requires some time for devoted daily practice. And, it doesn't stop the, at times painful, difficulty of having to grow and develop on earth. But it does provide some transcendent bliss. I have since studied other religions, which provide more theory (and more confusion) but less direct practice. Even if you decide on a more complex theoretical side to religion, the ability to meditate is fundamental. One of the huge benefits of this simple book is that the absence of theory/belief/doctrine means that you can use it without conflict with whatever other religious beliefs you may have.

To try to understand the basics of French cooking I have bought many French cookbooks, from Larousse, from Marabout, and from American authors. I avoided Bocuse because I thought it would be complicated. But it is not.
I am more happy with this book than with any other because it supplies the core of French classical cooking as no other book I have ever seen.
And it does this without chi chi, without complicated ideas and versions, and with a huge amount of commonsense.
There are many traps with other books - the pretty pictures, the amazing constructions, the new ideas. But when you try to use them, an ingredient is not available, an instruction is too vague, or something takes too long, or it is food that you will only make once.
Bocuse has none of these traps and problems.
You do not get lost in Bocuse; you come home.
