Forgotten: The Untold Story of D-Day’s Black Heroes, at Home and at War
Forgotten: The Untold Story of D-Day’s Black Heroes, at Home and at War

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Forgotten - A very important book that helps us remember !, 3 février 2016
Achat vérifié(De quoi s'agit-il ?)
This is a very important book – thoroughly researched, smoothly and concisely written, and given the advanced age of the central personalities, extremely timely. Concentrating on the life and actions of the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion the book paints a wider and very vivid picture of what life was like for African American soldiers in general during World War II. Despite the outrageousness of the conditions and racist statements these people had to face daily, the author avoids polemicizing; she lets the facts speak for themselves. As I read this fascinating account, I had the eerie feeling that I should have known these facts already. These remarkable men and their stories should have been part of the narratives all along about WWII and in particular about D-Day. Instead they were brushed aside and might have stayed that way forever but for the author’s years of research and writing. Despite the title, she makes it possible for us to remember via one good read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Government by the (Real) People..., 1 juin 2014

Elizabeth Warren writes about her life and the motivations that drove her decisions in clear, straightforward language. Though she has had a brilliant academic and political career, she reminds us that government actions are performed by people, people who have experiences with life and love and death, divorce, financial problems, difficult personal decisions. From the development of her expertise in bankruptcy which took decades of dedication to her concern for the related area of consumer protection, to corruption in the banks, then on to the multiple issues she must confront as a Senator, she has reminded us that what governments do touches the lives of real people. She further insists that making the lives of all citizens better should be the focus of all government actions. Too often, special interests have manipulated and lobbied our legislators and executives to act counter to that principle. Yet Warren remains a true believe and has demonstrated a remarkable stamina over decades to keep pushing for, as the title suggests, a "Fighting Chance." Along the way, she covers some of the major crises of recent years and offers common sense reasons why this is possible.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A fascinating take on an important epoch..., 2 janvier 2014

Reiss supplements extensive research with recently discovered archives to recount the life of a fascinating and little known figure. As he does so, he provides fascinating insights into the political and cultural climate before, during and after the French revolution, including the development of racism during this period. Hightly recommended !

Ms Williams uses her dazzling technic skills only for enhancing the music and never to distract attention from the composer's intentions. Just wonderful !

Mandis makes a good case for the application of organizational drift to the case of Goldman Sachs, and since he had worked there, he has insights into its day to day operations that are very informative. It's worth reading, but its academic style becomes a little heavy at times. More important, his insistence on 'academic neutrality', used as a justification for not making value judgments, is irritating when he discusses some of the excesses that made Goldmann one of the culprits in the recent meltdown.
