A light entertaining and insightful book to read, especially if you are relaxing somewhere, like on vacation or at the beach. Likely to finish it in one sitting, which makes it the page-turner that the author wanted it to be. Everything We Keep, The Usurper and other stories, Forgotten Secrets ae the captivating reads that have made my August so far.

A captivating story for a good price at that. This character-rich, suspenseful and well-written thriller is worthy for a second read and counts with Triple Agent Double Cross, The Black Road among worthy, recommendable and affordable reads of the week.

Here we have another accomplished piece of Alice Hoffman work. "The Marriage of Opposites" not only leads us hand-in-hand into the fascinating world of French impressionism through the rich character of Camille Pissarro and the other characters of his world, it also introduces us to enchanted settings of islands, cities and countrysides. Complex though some of the emotions are, they reveal the reality of the world of the characters and the times they found themselves in. I find this mix of time, characters, and environment brilliantly explored in "The Marriage of Opposites" and other stories like "Disciples of Fortune", "The Godfather", and "Master of the Game". I like stories replete with entertaining, bizarre and educative aspects.

This is a compelling read. As a matter of fact, the good thing about this debut psychological thriller is its smooth-flowing nature. It held my attention from the beginning all the way to the end. And it served its purpose by making the reader to stop and ponder in the course of reading it, as well as it makes the reader to ponder even further after the read, because life as we experience it today is full of things that are twisted. “The Widow” comes on the heels of “Flash of the Sun” as thrillers that I found with unique approaches. I look forward to other works by Fiona Barton, especially the thrillers.

I thought the short stories genre was losing its appeal among readers, but Neil Gaiman just rekindled my faith, and short stories masters like Anton Chekhov would also be proud of him. Gaiman's insightful recounts, brilliant use of subterfuges, lofty ideas and smooth style of writing made his works not only easy to read, but also enjoyable as well. In so few lines, we get rich and deep stories; in so few pages we get taken into worlds we are not familiar with, yet emerge more knowledgeable. I recently observed this feat in "The Usurper and Other Stories" by Janvier Chouteu, and "Rogues" by George R.R. Martin. Neil Gaiman, you have got a new fan here.

The contribution women make in society an especially in family life is enormous. Women are the nurturers and determine a lot what men turn out to be. Feminism in its over form portrays that, but risks undermining or undervaluing women's enormous contrition, especially when manifested in an aggressive or belligerent way. This point is succinctly elaborated in the story "The Oaf" from the collection "The Usurper: and Other Stories. In short, Feminism can sometimes be counterproductive. Chimamanda brought out the nuances so well.

A fascinating account on the disturbing subject of sex slavery. Nancy Enonchong told it with a curious mix of fantastic settings, colorful characters, a simple narrative and succinct descriptions. I was particularly intrigued by the Cameroon factor, being someone from there and after recently reading related works like "the Usurper and Other Stories", "The Concubine". The thing I like about this fascinating piece of writing is the insight it provides into a world where many seem to ignore.

I like well-written works, especially ones with an all-encompassing presentation of the shades of life. Harper Lee's classic is one of those smooth-flowing works, written with an insight and presented in an easy to relate manner that is easy to grasp. It is an unique style seen in works like "The Usurper and Other Stories", "Water for Elephants" and "The Alchemists". "Go Set a Watchman" is a great piece of literature and a recommended read.

It is not often that one stumbles upon a well-written story whose price has been marked down to make it within reach of simple folks like us. For that, thank you, J Sterling! I initially read the blurb and glossed over the opening chapter not expecting much, but the story caught my interest and kept it that way. Reading the subsequent chapters proved what I suspected. J Sterling has a bestseller here. The story touches on the much talked about subject of love in a special way, bringing out nuances through the characters, plot and narrative left me anticipating more and more. It brings to mind stories like Splendid Comets, Thorn Birds, and War and Peace. This is a story to read again and recommend as well.
