IMS Application Developer Handbook will give a hands-on view of exactly what needs to be done by IMS application developers to write an application and take it "live" on an operator's network. It will offer practical guidance on building innovative applications using the features and capabilities of the IMS network, show how the rapidly changing development environment is impacting on the business models employed in the industry and how existing network solutions can be moved towards IMS. The book will also elaborate on how IMS applies basic VoIP principles and techniques to realise a true multi-access, multimedia network. The Handbook demonstrates how the IMS architecture and protocols are applied to multimedia services from a "hands-on" perspective, ensuring that developers know how to use the IMS most effectively for their chosen application.
- Clear, concise and comprehensive view of the IMS and Rich Communication Suite (RCS) for developers
- Written by established experts in the IMS services layer, who have been involved in many customer projects for the implementation of fixed mobile converged IMS network and service
- Covers potential service and operator scenarios for the IMS architecture; it is significantly more than merely a description of the IMS standards

Biographie de l'auteur
Ulf Olsson is Senior Expert at Ericsson's Business Unit Multimedia, with a main interest in application architecture. He entered the world of programming forty years ago, working with large scale software system architectures for the past thirty. Initially, these efforts were in the field of distributed high performance systems for shipborne command and control, but as it turned out the principles and experiences from that field were surprisingly applicable also to the design of mobile packet data systems. He has been with Ericsson since 1996, being involved with systems like GPRS, PDC, UMTS, cdma2000 and - of course - IMS. His professional focus has recently shifted to the next level of abstraction: how to support and automate the business processes of a communications service provider. He holds a M.Sc. in engineering physics from Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology, having also spent a scholarship year at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. He is the co-holder of a number of patents in the mobile communications area, and is a frequent contributor to Ericsson Review.
Catherine Mulligan is the Transitional Research Fellow in Innovation Studies at Horizon Digital Economy Research at the University of Nottingham. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge, and an MPhil in Engineering, also from the University of Cambridge. She received first class honours for her BSc. (Business Information Technology) from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Prior to her current post, Catherine worked for 15 years in the IT and telecommunications industries, including 10 years at Ericsson contributing extensively to the IMS - in particular representing Ericsson within several standardization forums. She holds various patents in core network areas. Catherine is also the co-author of several books, including "SAE and the Evolved Packet Core: Driving the Mobile Broadband Revolution" (Elsevier, 2009) and the sole author of "The Communications Industries in the Era of Convergence" (Routledge, 2011), which investigates the economic and technical factors driving the communication industries.
Ioannis Fikouras is currently chief architect for Services & Software at Ericsson Research. He joined Ericsson in 2005 to pioneer the application of service composition for IN, IMS and Internet services within Ericsson. His work produced the Ericsson Composition Engine (ECE) and other technologies. Ioannis then made the switch to the real world to work as Strategic Solution Manager for Ericsson Global Services in the area of IMS and Service Delivery Platform (SDP).

This book is one of the latest publications in IMS area. It goes in details not only for developers but also system integration wise as well. I would still be preferring more details about some sample configurations; for example a NAPTR,SRV,A/AAA-Record for a IMS iDNS that will help a new beginner to understand how it really works from top to bottom.
Thanks for the good work & efforts!
Regards
Fatih E. NAR
But IMS crucially also wants to learn from the one key defect of the Internet. The lack of an intrinsic authentication mechanism. Given that the telecos have always charged for phone access, the ability of IMS to have strong authentication is an economic necessity for them. Also, the hopeful inability to forge metadata about an IMS communication will reduce the incidence of IMS spam and other malware. Some readers will want to carefully scrutinise this section of the book to see how well security is implemented.
The text delves heavily into the lower level details of the IMS architecture. Including the Session Initiation Protocol. A common idea throughout the book is the extensive use of finite state models to understand the workings of a protocol. The narrative is directed at an electrical engineer with a background in telephony or, perhaps lacking that, a background in knowing the Internet protocol. From readers outside those contexts, it can be a difficult read.
In the end this book is easy to follow and read and the authors talk in a way that is catching and keeps you interested, the book slowly introduces advance topics to ensure that the reader can follow and does not get confused. This is a great book for an all on one for learning development techniques for ISM applications and the history of IMS. However, even though it is easy to follow and learn the topic, it would help if you have a basic understanding of Networking (at least the OSI model) for gaining a deeper understanding of the underlying network information presented in the book. This is an easy read and a great resource for learning IMS or developing IMS Applications, highly recommend!!
It even addresses topics that typically don't appear in technical books such as an excellent overview of the basics, and issues such as revenue generation (how to charge for applications). Alas, the chapter on revenue generation is very short, but still outlines enough revenue models and mechanisms to get me thinking into new directions.
It's not often that you can refer to a technical book as a "real page turner," but this is one of them (assuming, of course, that one has an interest in this topic). Very well done.
