On Amazon U.K.’s website the ‘Handbook of Diabetes 4th Edition’ looked like the most comprehensive textbook about diabetes.
I am pleased I bought a copy of the book.
I think books about diabetes fall into two categories. They are the ones written for people who have diabetes and their support networks (their friends and relatives mainly), and the books which have been written for healthcare professionals.
Diabetes is big business now. So many books are available. Most offer recipes which look fantastic but I could spend many hours in shops looking for the ingredients. The books must be attractive, otherwise nobody would buy them. The one I like most in this category is ‘Fixing Dad’.
However, I have found the books written for students of diabetes, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals really helpful. In particular the ‘Handbook of Diabetes 4th Edition’. It presents the science of diabetes extremely well. It is the clearest book I have found about diabetes and how it affects the human body.
There is no need for people with the condition to buy books about diabetes. It is possible to borrow them from public libraries but the more scientific ones are harder to find in them. Also, the National Health Service provides plenty of free information and I have several books about diabetes which healthcare professionals have given me. There is also a lot of information about diabetes on the web.
Surprisingly there is very little information in books about the danger of high glucose levels and of acid developing in one’s blood. That said I am finding the scientific books are changing my approach to diabetes. In particular I found a list in ‘Diabetes Unpacked’ very clear. It is a list of what people with diabetes should drink and eat, and what they should
avoid.
Some people who have diabetes might prefer the books about the condition which have been written for them easier to understand than this handbook. Perhaps because I am an industrial journalist and spend most of my working day assimilating new, technical, usually engineering information I prefer the textbooks.
The ‘Handbook of Diabetes 4th Edition’ is written for healthcare professionals but it is a practical book in the sense that the information has been written to be acted upon. Reading it has increased my awareness of the danger of eating lots of apple pies, chocolate, and cakes and as result I believe I can improve my diet.
The book is full of colour illustrations. On the outside back cover it says that they are in downloadable form in “the companion CD”. However prospective buyers should be aware that a companion CD containing all 250 images in the book is not supplied with the book. These can be obtained in electronic form by sending an e-mail to customer@wiley.com.
