Laurel (Kazan) has always been the odd wallflower, choosing to live at home with her father, while her glamorous identical twin, Audrey (Kazan), possesses the confidence and appeal to succeed in the big city. When tragedy strikes and Laurel is mistaken for her twin sister, she makes the impulsive decision to assume her sister’s identity and become The Pretty One. As she eases into her new, independent existence, Laurel discovers that she’s capable of accomplishments she had never before had dreamed of: excelling in a career, maintaining friendships and even finding love. Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks), Jake Johnson (TV’s “New Girl”) and Ron Livingston (Drinking Buddies) star in this quirky, comedic drama about family ties and second chances.

Of course there is one confident, successful twin, and the other that still lives at home, awkward, and hiding from the world.
The two are in a car accident, where the confident sister is killed, and the surviving sister wakes up in the hospital, realizing she has been mistaken for her twin.
This is where the story takes a different approach. The twins had a very good relationship, not a story where the plot revolved around an obsession of one wanting to get rid of the other, or that the focus of the story is how long the twin can keep up the charade.
She keeps the secret for a while, but confesses, and has to deal with the fallout, including attending her sister's funeral, after she had already attended her own..............as her sister.
It ends up being more of a "coming of age" story, with good writing and performances, especially by Kazan.
Zoe Kazan gives a great and memorable performance as the twins, Laurel and Audrey. Laurel is socially awkward and lives at the parents' home still, while Audrey is the confident, "pretty" sister that has moved out and is making her way in the big city. Audrey comes home to visit, and a circumstance arises that leads to Laurel assuming her identity.
This is a refreshingly original story that has a much to say about identity, human relations, and even families. Both funny and poignant, it weaves a heartfelt path through a range of emotions and themes that will sometimes having you laughing at Laurel, sometimes empathizing with her, and other times looking outside of her through the eyes of others around her.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a well-written, bittersweet story with a compelling performance by a young actress.
