This is a movie that has all the aspects of a western, yet most of the action takes place in Virginia. Alvarez Kelly (played by William Holden) is a Mexican national and it is during the last year of the American Civil War. Kelly has just completed a cattle drive that originated in Mexico when he meets with a Union officer about the delivery. Told that he has to load the cattle for shipment east, Kelly at first balks but is then “convinced” to do so.
Once the cattle are driven to their location in Union-occupied Virginia, Confederate Colonel Tom Rossiter kidnaps Kelly and takes him into Confederate territory. Rossiter then tries to convince Kelly to help the Confederates steal the cattle from the Union in order to feed the starving people of Richmond. At first, Kelly balks but once again he is “convinced” to aid the cause.
While some of the action scenes are a bit on the absurd side, what makes this a good movie is the interaction between Kelly and Rossiter. They are on opposite sides, each with principles, yet willing to shed them in order to get what they want. Kelly wants paid in good money for his cattle without taking sides in the war while Rossiter knows that the Confederacy desperately needs the beef.
In the end, the adventurer Kelly proves to be an honorable man while the apparently ruthless Colonel Rossiter demonstrates that he is not as rigid in his thinking as he claimed. Like so many westerns, it comes down to a grudging respect between two very different men that develop some form of friendship. There are also females that complicate things with some serious sexual innuendo.
