Beautifully written "dickensian" but modern story.

I loved this book. The story of this deeply stricken child who developes into an imperfect , wounded man whos love for, and sesitivity to beauty partly saves. The language is rich, baroque, evocative. Loved/
admired/ was sucked into the long descriptions of torment and anguish barely eased by drugs. And yes, if you hate drugs and see no way to understand the attraction, the need for it, you better not read this book. It is not for the morally severe. I think the book makes an interesting and valid case for "eternal" works of art even if , as the author makes it clear, the connexion between their individual beauty and attraction can not be but personal.
