HASH(0x89066bb8) étoiles sur 5 indispensable for walking Rome! 27 août 2004
Par danANC - Publié sur Amazon.com
I bought this in a bookstore in the Rome training station, and it proved a fantastic resource for navigating the streets of Rome on foot. It put the maps in my Let's Go to shame, and made walking Rome's often confusing streets much easier. It was the best street map of Rome I saw, either in Rome, or in the U.S. since. I like to walk when I travel, and I wanted to be able to walk to the Vatican, and then to the stadium for a soccer game. (The latter turned out to be overly ambitious.)

It includes a map of the metro/subway system, a region overview map, and a grid indicator map showing which page to use. The last is helpful, since this book is in the "Thomas Brothers" guidebook style, with 95 pages of detailed maps, and an approximately 150 page street name index. The maps indicate many of the major tourist sites, though not everything, and so it is probably best used in conjunction with a guidebook of some type.

The legend is in both Italian and English, and as a street map, it's pretty easy to use even if you don't speak Italian. At about 5x8", it's easy to put in a pocket or small bag for walking with, and not too obvious if you need to consult it standing on the street (which I did, regularly.)

I purchased this map as well as the Knopf Mapguide for Rome. The Knopf is extremely cute. The Michelin is extremely useful. For our 7 day trip we walked virtually everywhere taking very few taxis. The Knopf map has no index and list only major streets. Unless you enjoy backtracking a lot you need a very detailed map. Paris and Rome have many side streets going in various directions often meeting towards a circle. You may have five or six streets intersecting. Of those, many are quite short. We found ourselves everyday just standing at a corner trying to figure out which direction to walk and that was WITH this detailed map.

I can't imagine going to a city like Rome without a good map like this one.

This is much too small to really get a good sense of going from one area to another in Rome. Also, I want to be able to write my own notes - such as bus routes etc, and this paper is laminated. I don't know of any times in all my travels that I pull out a maps whilst standing in the rain so why all this water resistant paper for maps? Also, since the description is limited I didn't know this until I received the map. Now I must pay to return. Not worth it.

I have used these spiral bound maps from Michelin for Rome and Paris. I like them better than any other maps I have used. They are easy to carry and convenient to use. I had bought some maps that fold open but you can't really use them on the street or subway or bus. They also usually didn't have a street index. The map book has references to adjacent pages on top, side, and bottom of each page making it easy to find the adjacent map section. I like these spiral bound map books and think they are the best. It appears that Michelin has stopped making the spiral bound map book of Paris so you should buy a used copy ASAP if you are even thinking about a trip to Paris.

HASH(0x8906a450) étoiles sur 5 still the best map of Rome 30 avril 2014

indispensable for walking Rome, though not as good as the earlier edition, which had a number over a tiny street and the reader could find its' name in a section of the index. I had to walk at bit to find Vicolo dei Soldati.
