Got the no 2 size brush and it is fantastic for sketchbook and detailed drawing/painting. The tip is surprisingly sharp and resilient. I won't rehash how awesome this brush is - I think others have covered it better than I could- but I did want to post a picture since I wasn't sure how big this brush would be upon arrival. Happy painting!

Using this kind of brushes takes a bit of getting used to as the hairs don't come back to a default shape/position- rather the hairs take the shape of the last stroke! They hold loads of water and can make very thin lines. When wet, they come to a very fine point that is great for details. I got size 0, 2, and 4. I usually paint on the small side (9in X 12in). The sizing is very different from the sizing of "normal" brushes. Size 0 is larger than my regular size 4! Overall, I am very happy with my new brushes.

I have five da Vinci Pure Blue Squirrel brushes. (while I'm at it, I should mention that I have one Raphail, One Winsor Newton, and two Isabey Pure Squirrel brushes. (If I find one on sale, I pawn one of my grandkids to buy it). Truly, it is the Pure-Blue-Squirellishness of them that is most remarkable. I had been told they were worth the price and held more color (or water) than any other brush. I should, and will, measure the difference in capacity. But on sight, holding two brushes in a glass of water and then squeezing the water into empty paint pans, I was shocked to see a whole lot more water from these beautifully made Pure Blue Squirrel brushes. One interesting note: no matter how heavy the load of color in the bristles, they don't drip. Getting the color to flow requires touching the tip to a surface.

Aesthetics: As an artist, you'll benefit from the physical look and feel of da Vinci's Pure Blue Squirrel brushes. The handle shapes and lengths have a wonderful feel. All the brushes in this series have beautiful hand wound bindings, da Vinci 418-5 Pure Blue Squirrel Quill-Petit Gris Pur Watercolor Mop and high lacquer sheen and sloping shaped handles. Holding one in your hand is soooo nice.

I won't say that these brushes completely eliminate the need for a rigger, mainly because I don't have a broad enough experience to make such a statement. But I can tell you that I don't have to find a different brush to complete exquisitely tiny detail. The bristles come to an excellent point, and that point can hold a lot of color.

Let's see... what else? Oh! The way the brush bristles feel as you stroke it onto paper. I don't know how to explain the difference between this and sable or this and squirrel with most excellent synthetic fibers. It feels more flowey.

I've heard that they don't hold up as long as sable or synthetic/squirrel mixes. I don't know that to be true. Frankly, I don't care. Not that I'm rich. I have to save up to get these brushes. Makes them just that more a joy! Art is more than creating a product. It is being present for the creation, These brushes enrich that experience.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 This brush has become my absolute favourite watercolour brush of all time 30 septembre 2014

This brush has become my absolute favourite watercolour brush of all time. It holds a ton of water and springs back into shape better than the same brush in any of the other brands. It also enables me to paint more loosely due to its soft bristles. The point is super sharp allowing for small detail in even the larger size brushes. The brush is also a lot bigger and a size 8 would be the eqivelant to a size 10 or even a 12 compared to other brands. It may be a little pricey but it is worth every penny.

It's taken me awhile to get to this review because ... well, first the pkg blew off our porch, and I didn't know it had been delivered. When I checked, and Amazon delivery info said, "delivered", my son went out and found the pkg. Fortunately, none the worse for wear. I'd wanted to do a portrait of my best friend - our Goldendoodle, for some time now, and hadn't done it. So getting the da Vinci, size 2, Watercolor brush, was the perfect excuse!
The brush worked beautifully, held as much watercolor paint as I threw at it, and once rinsed came out looking brand new. My style is usually highly pigmented and drippy, drippy, drippy wet! A mop brush was the perfect brush for me, working on a smaller portrait. I know if I was going to do something large, I'd go to a larger brush, and would look at the da Vinci brushes again because this one is doing well for me. I'd like to do another portrait and use a da Vinci brush suited to acrylics - drippy acrylics, and in a larger size, but I know I'll be really happy with any da Vinci brush I choose. I watched the video in the listing, and was really impressed with da Vinci's painstaking method of making each and every brush by hand. Interesting video! It's what convinced me to give it a try.

I'd recommend this brush to anyone who loves working with watercolors!
